The Battjes Family

In October, Paul, Joanna and their son Ben, came to Arequipa for a visit.  They are a lovely missionary family from Canada.  Paul is in the process of creating a cookbook about the food and faith of the people of Peru.  Joanna is a talented art teacher and did some great projects with the kids.  They also visited the mission churches of Yarabamba and San Lucas as well as touring Colegio San Lucas.  Their travels took them from Lima to Arequipa and then on to Puno and Cuzco.  Below are some pictures of the time they spent with the kids in Sagrada Familia.
The first project was a prayer bracelet.  Each bead on the bracelet stands for something different like God, love or rest.
Here, Joanna is explaining the bracelet while I translate and her son Ben (on the left) helps out.
Kati and Tamara with their finished bracelets.
Marta is working on her bracelet.

On another day, they made butterfly cards that were turned into booklets.
Hermelinda shows her beautiful butterfly card.
Juan Diego working diligently on his.
All the kids were working hard.

The kids show off their work.
Waldir is working while Wilber poses for the camera.
I finally catch him working!

When they are finished with their butterflies, Ben shows them some cool origami.
For another project, they make colorful bookmarks.
Kati works happily on hers.

Lizbeth is happy with her bookmark.

Since Paul is making a cookbook, Marta and Vicky made some special dishes for him to use in the book.  Both girls are currently in cooking school and seem to be doing very well.

They had a good time working together on this.

And finally, the kids pose with the family and their new creations.  A big thanks to the Battjes family for sharing their passions with the kids of Sagrada Familia in such a loving way!

Dia del Estudiante (Student's Day)

Yesterday, Sept 20th, was Student's Day.  It's basically just a big party all day!  They get to eat lots of junk and then the staff puts on  a sort of talent show for them.  It was a lot of fun!

This is one of the classroom parties.
A few of the boys enjoying their snacks.
Isela is in the middle.
More kids having fun in their classroom.
Some of the moms bring food and help serve.
Lots of food!
Tamara with her classmates.
The school director and Fiorella, the school secretary, don't miss out on the food!
And now for the show...Padre Daniel gives the opening comments.  I don't think the director is really asleep back there!
The raising of the Peruvian flag.
This is the first grade getting ready to attend the show.  They come into the library all the time..so cute!
Fiorella and Gabriel host a pretend talent show.
This one of the teachers on the right with the microphone acting like an unorganized student.

Some of the students enjoying the show.

A group of teachers dancing for the kids.  They loved it!
This is a skit where various characters came by and tried to disarm whatever animal was supposed to be in the tent.  Spiderman was unable to tame it!  As was Batman and Superman.

You can see there is quite a struggle going on inside the tent!
This is supposed to be Indiana Jones giving it a try.  He also fails.
Alas, one of the students, Carlos, gets the wild beast under control and becomes the hero!
Pamela, on the right, is not sure what to think of that!

There is also a sack race.

And finally a toilet paper wrapping contest.  The kids really seemed to enjoy the festivities and I think the teachers liked it too!

This is some of the little girls leaving at the end with all their pink backpacks!
